It is a major jump from video tape to VCD. Later on, DVD replace the VCD and now, Blu Ray is the one that are popular. No doubt, watching a movie in blu ray disc is much better than a DVD, no matter the sound or video quality. Everything is about High Definition. In future, all TV program will be in HD for sure. This is the trend right now.
